Fri 31 Aug - Arriving Hanoi

After some 24 hrs on the road, we have arrived at Hotel Meracus in Hanoi.

The arrival at Hanoi's International Airport went very smooth and we were out in no time. Of course, the airport looked a bit like a relic from USSR circa 1950, but they are building a new one just next it. Or so they say, it is all boarded up and you can not see any activity beyond the boarding.

Our driver from the hotel met us at the airport, with the sign "Hotel Meracus welcomes Mr Hans Carlen". Very cute.

The trip to the centre of town took some 30 minutes or so.

The general driving here, of course, is nothing Australia. Cars, and more to the point, motorcycles are coming from all directions. They have roundabouts, but these are even more chaotic. The pedestrian zebra crossings are there as a "decoration" only. So are lines dividing lanes. Quite charming the whole thing really.

Many buildings are quite nice on the outside, colourful and quite decorative. Of course, look at the same building from the side, the colour scheme is usually various shades of grey. 50 or so...

Many other buildings are crumbling or just incomplete, perhaps when the money just run out.

Once at Hotel Meracus, which is next to the lake and right in the shoe district, we receive a drink of some pink, lukewarm liquid while the formalities are gone through.

After a quick shower and change of clothes, we are wandering around the street. It is hot and humid, early 30s.

Walked around Hoan Kiem lake like the locals and studied the map a few times as we explored further.

Early refreshment at Gecko cafe, some spring rolls and bargain half litre tiger beer for equivalent of 50 cents.
Tired and early night to sleep, without any proper dinner. Very nice room and comfy bed, zzzzz....

Thu 30 Aug - Overnight flight to Kuala Lumpur

Well, here I am. Hans that is. Waiting in Manly for the 4.15pm ferry to depart for town. All ready to go with my bag and my backpack.

I am catching up with Di for a quick meal in town before we go to the airport. The whole day has been a kind of waiting to get moving and I must say that I much rather prefer departures in the morning. Just get on with it...

The weather forecast for Hanoi has been typical tropical wet season, between 26 and 34 degrees, 26 being the "coldest" time at night, with thunderstorms and heavy rain. Very high humidity. Oh well, we will see.

Hotel Meracus in Hanoi's old quarter, where we are booked accommodation for the first 3 nights, has received absolutely raving reviews in Tripadvisor. In fact, I have never ever seen anything written up so much, 5 stars given by almost everybody (a scam, questions my bullshit filter...) Despite paying only $43 per night, I have high expectations of the place. Perhaps not such a good thing as reality then tends to disappoint...

After a delicious meal at Lee's, we jumped on the train and went to the airport. Everything went surprisingly smooth, so we were early to everywhere. They tested me for explosives, but drew nought...

Fast forward to KLIA... That's Kuala Lumpur International Airport, for the next update....

Local time is 4.15am (- 2 hours from Sydney) and the airport is pretty empty apart from people like ourselves, killing time, sleeping, before their next flight is due. Outdoor temperature is apparently 25 degrees Celsius. Looks all too familiar here, our 4th visit since 2004.

The plane landed early in Kuala Lumpur which wasn't really necessary as we had a long wait scheduled for here anyway. So, a final blog update for "today"... I also wanted to see whether there is access to Blogger and to Facebook here (was not in Guangzhou) and there is...

There is Di sort of sleeping in the background....

At 6.30am KL time, it was breakfast for champions. When in Malaysia, do at the Malays do.... Eat roti canai and drink coffee for breakfast...
